About
UTEC’s sanitation and water research is concentrated at its Central-South Regional Technological Institute (RTI) in Durazno, widely known as the university’s “green” campus. The specialized labs driving research in this field include:
- Biotechnology and Environmental Microbiology Laboratory: Used to study biological treatment, pathogen reduction, and microbial risks in waste.
- Effluents Laboratory: Dedicated to analyzing biochemical/chemical oxygen demand (BOD/COD), total solids, and other parameters crucial to fecal sludge and wastewater characterization.
- Household, Agricultural, and Industrial Waste Laboratory: Focuses on sludge stabilization, management, and treatment technologies.
The IHE Delft Partnership & Global Sanitation Graduate School UTEC has built a robust alliance with the IHE Delft Institute for Water Education.
- Sanitation Graduate Programs: UTEC leverages its partnership with IHE Delft to run a Postgraduate Programme in Sanitation and Sanitary Engineering. This incorporates curriculum standards from the Global Sanitation Graduate School (GSGS).
- Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) Curricula: The coursework covers the technical characterization, handling, laboratory methods, and treatment of sludge from onsite sanitation technologies (such as septic tanks and pit latrines).
- Humanitarian WASH Diploma: UTEC and IHE Delft also host a Graduate Professional Diploma Programme (GPDP) in Humanitarian WASH taught in Spanish. This targets urban emergency contexts, often utilizing specialized faecal sludge field laboratory frameworks to safely analyze and treat waste during crises
